TOURNAMENT INFORMATION

SKILL LEVELS
  • Novice: 1 year or less (White belt)
  • Beginner: 1 – 3 years No-Gi (Blue belt)
  • Intermediate: 3 – 6 years No-Gi (Purple belt)
  • Advanced: 6+ No-Gi (Brown and Black belts)
  • Absolute Division – Gi only, and sign-up will determine the bracket.
    * Competitors must compete in the Regular Division to be eligible for the Absolute Division.

In honor of DVB, who loved to train traditional BJJ in a Gi, the absolute division will be Gi only and at the end of the event.

Once the No-Gi brackets are complete, competitors who wish to compete in the optional Absolute Division can don a Gi and compete in the open division. “Open” is defined as weight and experience.

LENGTH OF MATCHES
  • Advanced/Absolute Division-6 minutes
  • Other Divisions-5 minutes
WEIGHT CLASSES:

Weight classes and divisions will be determined at weigh-ins based on the number of people who sign up.

  • Belt or skill level may be combined to create competitive brackets.

AGE LEVELS (Same weight/skill levels)
Age levels may also be combined based on skill level to create competitive brackets.

PLAY ELIGIBILITY

  • All players must have ID on them at the sport facilities for roster checks. If a player does not have ID available, they will not be allowed to play.

  • Eligibility and IDs will be strictly enforced throughout the tournament.

REGISTRATION

  • Team Registration Deadline:
    Tue. 7/1/25
Note: We only need one person from the team to register by this date (i.e. coach), so that we can build the brackets.
  • Guaranteed Shirt Deadline:
    Mon. 7/7/25
Registrants after this date will select from the available shirts, on a first come, first serve basis at check-in.

  • Late Registration begins:
    Mon. 7/21/25
Registration on and after this date will incur a $10 late fee.

POINT SYSTEM:

Gi and No-Gi will be scored the same.

Must establish position based on referee 3 count.

  • Takedowns – 2 points
  • Sweep – 2 points
  • Knee on the Belly – 2 points
  • Guard Passes – 3 points
  • Mount Position – 4 points
  • Back Take (both hooks in) / Mount – 4 points

Advantages:
There will be NO ADVANTAGE POINTS awarded in this event. Points are only based on complete positions as mentioned above.

Guard pulling (determined by the referee) is allowed but not scored for the top competitor UNLESS a takedown is initiated and then the guard is pulled. In this case, points for a takedown will be awarded.

Illegal Techniques:

  • No neck cranks
  • No heel hooks (except advanced division/ No-Gi ONLY)
  • No bicep or calf cutters (except advanced division)

Other illegal techniques for all divisions:

  • No striking, biting, eye gouging (includes chin to eye), small joint manipulation (finger and toe locks), hair pulling, or ear pulling.
  • No fish hooking or fingers in an orifice.
  • No intentional lifting and slamming of your opponent.

Ways To Win:

  • Via tap out, either physically or verbally, the opponent cannot continue
  • Via points
  • Via disqualification
  • Via the referee’s decision after overtime
  • Referee’s call stands – GOOD SPORTSMANSHIP IS EXPECTED!

Disqualification:
A competitor may be disqualified for any of the illegal techniques listed above if deemed intentional. If a competitor cannot continue due to an illegal technique applied, the offending grappler will be disqualified.

Stalling:

The referee calls stalling anytime a competitor is deemed to be passive by avoiding action or backing out of bounds. The referee will give one official warning for the first offense. If the stalling competitor continues to stall, both competitors will be stood up, and the match will continue from the feet. The goal is to continue the forward motion of the position or submission attempt.

Note: Controlling an opponent in an established grappling position e.g. mount, side control, knee on belly, etc. is NOT stalling, it’s grappling.
If the position ends up out of bounds but control is established, restarts will be in the same position in the middle of the mat.

Fleeing submission by running out of bounds will result in 2 points to the competitor who had control of the submission. The competitors will be restarted in the center of the mat in the standing position. Fleeing a submission out of bounds a second time will result in disqualification.

Overtime:

If the score is tied, a 3-minute sudden-death overtime will take place. The first competitor to score a point with control will be the victor. If no points are earned in the sudden-death round, the referee will make the final decision and decide the winner.

The 3-minute round will be scored like a normal round. It will start from the standing position, and the first to score wins.
*If a match needs overtime, there will be a 90-second rest before the match restarts.

Hygiene:
At weigh-ins, all competitors will be checked for communicable diseases, not limited to, but including ringworm and bacterial infections. Fingernails and toenails should be neatly trimmed. No part of the body should have any sticky or oily substance.

Competitors Attire:
Well-fitting t-shirts, rash guards, board shorts (no pockets or zippers), or Gi pants will be allowed for No-Gi. In No-Gi, competitors may not grab or hold onto opponents clothing. A Gi with belt will be required for the Gi portion of the event. A rash guard or spats WILL BE allowed under the Gi. Competitors are not allowed to wear a rash guard under a t-shirt as this lends an unfair advantage and adds to elusiveness.

Be cool. This is not a tense, uber-competitive tournament. We are honoring one of our fallen brothers, and our jobs are tough enough as they are, so the #1 rule is: BE HUMBLE and HAVE FUN!

A lot of work has gone into making this event fun and a great experience for our First Responders.
